United States government has given between $800-900 billion support to Nigeria in the last several years. This is just as the Global Fund is to sign a $1 billion support for Nigeria for the next three to four years.
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Mohammed Ali Pate, who disclosed this when a U.S. joint team visited him yesterday in Abuja, said Nigeria appreciates the generosity of the American government, which has helped to strengthen public institutions in the country.
He said: “We need to ensure that the institutional capabilities are strengthened, so that the technical assistance provided can improve the performance of our institutions. And that’s going to be very important. This whole global efforts is to improve people’s health. There is a deliberate effort to ensure that the development space is better coordinated not only at the global level but also at the country level.
The“We have to do it also with our development partners like yourself and others who are going to come after your visit as well, so that we work constructively with them to by the end of the day serve Nigerians to improve their health and wellbeing.”
The delegation included head of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), Dr John Nkengasong; U.S. Global Malaria Coordinator, Dr David Walton; and Executive Director of Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (GFATM), Peter Sands.
Nkengasong said Global Fund is a partner with Nigeria, adding that Nigeria has the highest Global Fund investment in the world.
