Man Utd goalkeeper Andre Onana could miss AFCON opener as private plane blocked
Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana could miss the opening game of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) after his private plane was blocked.
Onana agreed to join up with Cameroon for their AFCON campaign in the Ivory Coast later than the rest of the squad, to enable him to play in United’s matches against Wigan and Tottenham.
The shot-stopper started at Old Trafford in a 2-2 draw against Spurs on Sunday afternoon before beginning his journey to west Africa immediately after the game.
However, his private jet has reportedly been blocked in Abidjan, Ivory Coast on Monday morning due to bad weather conditions in Yamoussoukro, the capital city where Cameroon will play Guinea.
Cameroon take on Guinea at 5:00pm GMT on Monday at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro.
But as per the Manchester Evening News, Onana has been stranded around 150 miles away in Abidjan, with Yamoussoukro Airport said to be surrounded by fog.
Sports Vibes has alleged that Onana will now attempt to travel to the Charles Konan Banny Stadium by car – a journey which should take just under three hours.
However, Onana participation in Cameroon’s opener has been thrown into doubt.
Onana allegedly pushed to represent United against Spurs and deferred his call-up to Cameroon duty due to a fear he could lose his status as the No.1 goalkeeper at the club.
Summer signing Altay Bayindir will be used in Onana’s absence. The player joined United from Fenerbahce in the summer but is yet to have been handed his debut.
Onana made his Cameroon debut back in 2016 and featured at AFCON 2021.
