Tinubu’s Desperate Gamble: Buying Religious Endorsements to Mask Mass Suffering

Written by Salihu Garba-mama Aliyu (#SAGMA).

“The Tinubu’s administration is leading us to destruction” that is the translation of the Hausa Christian song “Gwamnati Tinubu Hallaka Zamuje ” — Sang by Northern Christians Singers (watch the video clip herewith attached)

In a desperate attempt to manufacture public approval, the Tinubu administration is playing a dangerous game — courting both Christian and Muslim religious leaders to stage-manage endorsements or votes of confidence of its harsh and anti-masses policies. While Nigerians are daily groaning under skyrocketing food prices, insecurity, and economic hardship, the government is busy orchestrating fantastic religious spectacles to deceive both local and international observers into believing that its leadership enjoys widespread support. He is said to be done with the Judiciary and National Assembly members who are now seen masses as stooges of the Lagos landlord who bought for himself a 4 year term ticket to rule Nigeria untill 2027.

The recent visit of the Northern CAN Chairman to the Presidential Villa is a textbook example of this strategy. The same Christian leadership that once vehemently rejected Tinubu’s Muslim-Muslim ticket is now singing his praises. But why? The answer is simple: Tinubu needs religious leaders to help launder his government’s image, making it appear as though both Christians and Muslims genuinely support his failing policies.

But it doesn’t stop there. On the Muslim side, reports have emerged of a grand “Quranic Conference” being planned in Abuja, where 30,000 “huffaz” (memorizers of the Quran) are expected to gather. This event, allegedly initiated and backed by a top figure in the oil and gas industry— Mele Kyari who was recently kept on suspense as regard his retainship as GCEO of NNPC after attaining 60 years retirement age on 8th January 2025. As an Almajiri that he claimed to be — rising to high-ranking position — is said to be the brain behind the Quranic conference to further curry favour with Tinubu. A move widely seen by pundits as another propaganda stunt. Its goal? To play an endorsement circus for Tinubu’s government under the guise of religious unity, despite the widespread suffering caused by the administration’s reckless removal of fuel subsidies, another .

Nigerians are not fooled. The same clerics who are now being “settled” to organize this fantastic religious spectacle know that the removal of fuel subsidies, in collaboration with oil cartel leaders in the #NNPC, has plunged millions into poverty. Transport costs have soared. The prices of food, medicine, and basic commodities have tripled. And while Nigerians struggle to survive, Tinubu and his allies continue to accumulate wealth, borrow recklessly, and purchase luxury items—including a new presidential jet!

The irony is glaring: the Glorious Quran — a book of justice and truth — is now being manipulated as a tool to legitimize a government that has inflicted “untold hardship” on its people. The hypocrisy and crude insensitivity could not be more obvious. How can a government that has failed to address hunger, insecurity, and mass suffering suddenly claim to have the backing of both Muslim and Christian leaders? Ayat min ayati Akhirul Zaman (A sign from the signs of end of times)?

Let it be clear: staged religious endorsements do not reflect the genuine feelings of Nigerians. The “real voices” of the masses are those of the hungry, the unemployed, and the innocent, victims of kidnappings and banditry who live in constant fear. No amount of carefully choreographed religious gatherings can erase the suffering that Tinubu’s policies have unleashed on the country.

If the government truly seeks legitimacy, let it earn it through justice, fair economic policies, and genuine good governance — not through crude propaganda and stage-managed religious events designed to deceive the world. But if Tinubu insists on ruling through propaganda and political settlements, then 2027 will deliver the REAL VERDICT at the ballot box.

The people are watching. And they will not forget what need to be done.
