TEN YEARS OF CHIEF STEPHEN O. NWANKWO’S SCHOLARSHIP SCHEME: HONOURING A LEGACY OF EDUCATIONAL EXCELLENCE*

_by Comr Chukwuebuka Eze_

Today, we gather in profound appreciation to honour one of our own, a man whose heart and hands have touched countless lives: Chief Stephen Onwudiwe Nwankwo.

Late Nelson Mandela, a former South African president, is well known for this great quote: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.

These are the words that reverberate in the life and legacy of Chief Stephen Onwudiwe Nwankwo. As we celebrate his unparalleled contributions into the field of education and to community development, we bear witness to the ripple effects created by his benevolence and vision.

THE VISION OF THE MAN: CHIEF STEPHEN ONWUDIWE NWANKWO

Chief Stephen Onwudiwe Nwankwo is far more than a philanthropist; he’s has been a great source of hope and a shining example to many. His selflessness in making lives better through the sponsorship of quality education, healthcare, sponsoring of football activities in Eziama for the past 10 years and other charitable programmes and policies to the people of Idodo Zone such as caring for the needy and elderly across Enugu State, offering grants to support SMEs, and other impactful programmes.

THE GENESIS OF COMPREHENSIVE SECONDARY SCHOOL EZIAMA AMECHI IDODO

Comprehensive Secondary School Eziama Amechi Idodo was founded in 1996 by the now-defunct Eziama Development Union with the vision to provide quality education to the children of our community. This dream was born out of necessity-a response to the lack of accessible secondary education in our area.

Academic activities commenced in the school with high hopes. As a gateway to a brighter future for countless families, the school started its operation.
But as the years rolled on, challenges began to face this small community. In the wake of economic deprivation suffered by many families, parents couldn’t afford school fees for senior classes.

Moreover, the WAEC and NECO examination fees added an additional layer of stress in many homes, forcing hundreds of students to give up education in midstream. Dream deferred, the cycle of poverty seemed to be closing its grip on the community.

THE SCHOLARSHIP INITIATIVE: A NEW DAWN

In 2014, Chief Stephen Onwudiwe Nwankwo stepped in with a vision to bridge this gap. He launched a scholarship programme that has since become the cornerstone of educational accessibility in our community. This programme covers school fees for SS1 and SS3 students as well as WAEC and NECO fees for SS3 students. Over the past 10 years, this scholarship scheme, costing over 6.5 million naira annually, has exceeded 65 million naira in total expenditure. This ensures that no student is left behind due to financial constraints.

Just imagine how a parent would feel if he no longer had to choose between food for the family or his child’s education. Also picture the beaming smile of a student who would otherwise have dropped out and can now sit for his final examinations.

TRANSFORMATIVE IMPACT ON STUDENTS AND FAMILIES

The ripple of Chief Nwankwo’s scholarship initiative runs deep: those who would have dropped out of school are back and excelling in academics. It has relieved their families of economic burdens and more importantly, it has built a culture of academic excellence and aspiration.

What was once a distant dream of basic education for many families has now turned into a reality. Parents view it as a legitimate avenue of prospect for their children, while students are motivated to aspire for more.

EDUCATIONAL ADVOCACY AND THE PATH FORWARD

Chief Nwankwo firmly believes that education serves as the foundation for professional and personal development. Without it, the doors of career opportunities remain firmly shut. His undiluted support ensures that this critical stage of education is available to all, regardless of economic standing. In each scholarship that he grants, one sees the depth of his belief in the power of education to transform.

CELEBRATING A LEGACY OF LOVE AND GENEROSITY AND INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION

As we stand here today, we celebrate not just the man but the legacy of love and generosity he has built. The contribution of Chief Nwankwo has transformed lives and set a standard for community service that inspires us all. His generosity has shown that true leadership is about lifting others and creating opportunities for growth and development.

The most amazing thing about the work done by Chief Nwankwo is how it would influence the next generation. Sir, your story serves to attest to the difference that one person can make in effecting a positive change. His investments in education, healthcare, and community development have been seed sown with fruit certain to be reaped by succeeding generations.

MESSAGE OF GRATITUDE AND COMMITMENT/CONCLUSION.

Your contributions remind us of the power of selflessness and the importance of giving back. Your legacy will continue to inspire many generations to come.

May your legacy continue to inspire generations to come, and may your containers always be filled to the brim, as you have filled our hearts with gratitude.

As we present this award to Chief Stephen Onwudiwe Nwankwo today, we do so with hearts full of gratitude and admiration.

May your path continue to be blessed, and may your efforts inspire others to follow in your footsteps. Thank you for being a shining light in our community and beyond.
